Plodding on take 2

21st November 2020

Well here we are in Lockdown 2 and I think its week 2!  anyway due to end on 2nd of December,if! the rate of infections go down, in my view this is never going to happen with so many idiots still not obeying the simple rules and gathering together to protest against Lockdown!! in large numbers, so that alone will put us back two weeks, it all makes me very cross and angry and us that are later in life are much more at risk of severe reactions should we catch it! I have to keep reminding myself, control what you can control not what you cant i.e. other people!!! and focus on keeping ourselves safe. which is easy as we dont go in shops, we use click and collect and obey the rules of using masks, gel and washing hands!! they say they have vaccine now and will role it out with a couple of weeks, but if its like track and trace etc I wont hold my breath, I can see the whole thing being in the same position in June and possibly this time next year!!!

Anyway to more important matters, I am now at 1347 miles running this year which is great but, expensive on running shoes!! my cycling mileage is way down on previous years.

I have had a great week this week despite a 'Ground Hog Day' blip in the middle.

Sunday I had a lovely run back up Brent Knoll, beautiful if windy morning, didnt see anyone else having the summit to my self I even did two circuits of the peak as it was so nice !!

Monday I ran from Berrow - to Weston Super Mare Pier 10 miles with a young lady from the running club, she certainly kept up the pace, weather was good except for a couple of showers, I have to say I was certainly tired by the time we came to the end!!!  but it was a lovely run, all the way on the cycle path and seafront a challenging wind on the way back didnt help, I took a bladder this time but think I prefer the bottle !

Thursday after a couple of GHDs I decided to get my self out to the Quantocks, the forecast was good if a little windy ! in fact very windy! overnight rain cleared as I drove to Holford to park, I was the only one in the carpark, and I set off walking up Hodders Combe enjoying the peace and tranquility, as I gained height it still remained grey and very overcast and when I hit the ridge, the wind hit me!! so I descended quickly down Weacombe to pick up the Quantock Greenway along the base of the Quantocks to Paradise Combe, its been a long time since I mountain biked this route but it was thoroughly enjoyable and I met my first dog walker of the day!! I used my OS app to navigate in a couple of places as I was unsure not being there for a while, the leaves on the ground were quite drifted like snow and I found myself trudging through deep leaves up to my knees!!  it was soon time after the roller coaster path to climb back up to the ridge, givinging stunning views as I climbed , the grey skies were now broken with a little sunshine occasionally, I soon got to Halsway Post and mde my way along the wide track to Frog Combe, scattering sheep as I descended down the steep Combe, hard to believe we used to cycle down there and cycle up it at times!! i dropped into the final combe and one of my favourites Holford combe, the streams were quite wide so it took time to negotiate them without getting wet feet, I arrived back in the car park which was now very full! after 8.5 miles and 1600ft of climbing, a cracking mornings walk/ run !! a wonderful route that I shall repeat !

Friday was another hill day, this time Brean Down with a friend from the running club, it was a damp drizzle/windy day when I parked up at Berrow village Hall, and we made our way to run along the Beach to the base of Brean down, we soon covered the 1.5 miles along the beach as we had a tailwind, the tie was well out but the sand was very wet, but at least firm.

We climbed the tarmac road to the first summit and a great view of Weston etc. before heading offroad to the summit trig point, as we got higher it was clear that the drizzle had got worse as we were now at cloudbase, descending Clive slipped as he had road shoes on having forgotten his off road shoes, so we gingerly descended down to the Fort on the end , now gladly sheltered from the wind and the rain.

We decided to run the access road back after Clives slip and of course we were sheltered from the bad weather.

we descended the Down to hit the beach again for the 1.5 miles back to the car, straight into the wind making running difficult, but!! strangely it was really enjoyable and we got back to the car after 6.23 miles and 493ft of climbing. a cracking run again with good company, sadly no photos as it was rather wet!

A nice end to a strange week, but with three hill runs I cant complain, nice rest day today and hopefully a few miles on my bike tomorrow to give my legs an extended rest!

Nice Quantocks runs and very little cycling

Saturday 31st October

My statistics so far for the year from January 1st are Running 1251 miles whereas cycling I have only done 1307 in the last twelve months and 1201 since January!! so cycling very much on the back burner at the moment. I have lost my motivation to cycle for several reasons

1. the weather has not been great when I have had the opportunity to cycle [no excuse]

2. The Covid virus has meant I am very wary of visiting cafes etc and sharing space/ cutlery/cups etc  with others.

3. But! the main reason is I dont have anyone to cycle with locally any more, my regular buddys of last year etc, one had a nasty accident on his bike and not recovered fully and the other is on a mission to average 16-17 mph every time he goes out so is not interetsed in joining a slow 14 mph cyclist like me! Covid has also stopped me looking locally to start up a cycling group as it it would be unwise in the current situation to encourage what might be larger group to cycle with, I am also worried that whoever turns up might be a lot faster or slower than my intentions, or may not have the same commitment.I could drive with my bike to meet old friends, but this is where my Lazy side kicks in!!! I am very annoyed with myself for feeling this way!

I appreciate that not of these are valid excuses if I really wanted to do it!!!! Running seems to have taken over my life at present. The weekly club run on Tuesday evenings becoming the highlight of the week when I am Run Leader to a group of slow paced runners, each week I try to find a different , interesting route for them to do, the pace is only 11:30 ish a mile and we only do 4 miles but it is a very sociable group so good fun.

I have managed to get out for two lovely runs on the Quantocks when we were lucky with the weather, both starting from Dead Womans Ditch and about 9 miles in length

I also managed a couple of summit runs up Brent Knoll which again were very enjoyable with good views if somewhat windy

Plogging in Brent Knoll
Brent Knoll from half way up.

I did manage to do some 'Plogging' or litter picking ! on one of the trips!! but was lucky as Brent Knoll hill itself  was relatively litter free!

Another favorite run  has to be the Huntspill run, whilst nearly flat as it follows round the coast to the outflow of the Huntspill into the River Parret it does give a remote feeling and after leaving the Apex Park and crossing the River Brue is mainly off road with lovely views across to the Quantocks and Steart island, its usually very quit with few people about, the cows tend not to bother you and the sheep hurry out of your way when you approach

Fence issue reported to Sedgemoor Council who are now repairing it!! so worth reporting

Out flow at the Huntspill Clyce into the River Parrett

Its a pleasantt 6 or 9 mile run depending how you feel and also on which direction the wind is blowing!!

So far in October I have managed to run 128 miles, which is up on September and cycling only 96 miles but, at least one ride I did manage 62 miles when I met up with the ride leaders from my Manche to Med trip in 2017! I was able to guide them round the lanes from Cheddar to the coast and back to their campsite, a really enjoyable day out on the bike the furthest I have ridden in a long time, I seem now to only get out on my bike a couple of times a month which I find very frustrating  and annoyed with myself.

It was Mrs Bs 70th Birthday yesterday and mine in March so we are both starting to fell the age! especially with the rise in the Covid virus again, I am very frightened by the consequences unless the government do impose a lock down as it does seem out of control, at our age we are not sure about how we will be able to react if we do contract the virus, all we can do is protect ourselves, which means self isolating and not mixing with others, but, having a daughter in a school does highlight a particular issue that she could bring it home unaware she has done so. SO! it looks as though we are in for a winter of unknowns :-(

Tuesday, 22 September 2020

it just goes on and on and will get worse again before it gets better, I hope it does improve!!

 Sunday 20th September

The weeks are flying by , I cant believe its well over a month since I sat typing this blog!! trying to bring it up to date. But! one thing has not changed and seems to be never ending is this Covid Crap!!! it appears we are starting a second wave and cases are again rising, I have no doubt thanks to all the young people, socialising, protesting, having a meal out on the state, and seemingly unaware that they are spreading the virus, not wearing masks and generally not social distancing [ I have seen this often at first hand locally] as well as being invincible and!! not to mention taking it home to spread to  their grandparents, it does make me so angry to see the selfishness that this virus has generated, possibly far more than all the 'good' practice and help that has been given. Rant over...... all we can do is to keep ourselves safe, or try to, hence still not been anywhere, pub or cafe etc since March, I do venture into shops but with a purchase in mind and then get out fast, ensuring I gel my hands and wash them when I get home. What sad times we live in, then again we havent been subject to two world wars within twenty five years!!! so I should be grateful.

After all the above life carries on, the children are back at school, so the area is now only plagued by 'older' people in huge motor homes and caravans, looking at the size of some of the owners its a good job the caravans and motor homes are huge!!

We have been called on to help out with the grandchildren several times as the twins started school, but only for two hours a day for the first month. we did use the van to stay overnight at Cheltenham campsite, but we only needed to use the toilet, showering and washing at my sons house, I have to say though it was rather busy! and covid restrictions on the wash block reduced its capacity somewhat, for such a large number of vans. It was still nice to get out in the van and go into camping mode first time in nearly a year.

On to the more important matters of cycling and running, sadly my cycling is still suffering, from apathy due to no lack of cycling buddies, the weather, too hot, too windy or just plain lack of motivation. Running in the meantime, I seem to be increasingly doing more and more, whether its because I have people to meet up with or because I cant cycle so I will run I am not sure.

Anyway my stats for August saw me running 131 miles and cycling 118miles and I hit my running  1000 mile target on the 27th August a good 4 months earlier than last year, I have now decided to push on to 2020 km before the end of the year.

cycling I have only been doing local 30 -40 mile routes over relatively flat roads, height gain being in the region of a couple of hundred feet at the most over a 40 mile route, the road closures in the area are not helping, with Hinckley and new Internet being responsible in most cases although resurfacing is also being carried out. I do try to have my camera on my bike these days with so many idiots on the road, so if something does happen I will have proof!

Running I have been getting out 4 or 5 times a week, off road on the Quantocks and the mendips several times which was loveley, as well as the local hills of Brean Down and Brent Knoll. My longest run was the cycle path from Brean to Weston Super Mare, which is a lovely run and a short extension saw me running to the pier to make it upto 10 miles, this was a social run with the running club so an enjoyable morning out.

I have a new piece of kit that I am gettng used to using its a 5l Curber running vest from a new company called Harrier. Lots of pockets and will take a bladder and I did try this the other day and seemed very good, and it was only a 1 litre one so might save taking 2 x500ml bottles on the front. seems spacious in the back to take a waterproof etc. hopefully a good winter running pack ,at first it felt very high on my back but soon settled down with no bouncing about etc. love the pockets and some have zips on them as I am paranoid about things falling out of them. Harrierrunfree.co.uk   customer service seem excellent. raun in my new pack 3 times now and I like it better than my Montane Gecko!

Club runs are now restricted to 6 in a group again, and as a run leader I am only allowed 5 to run with me as are other run leaders, very difficult as many want to socialise!!! but are in different groups. all this makes it very difficult to meet up and catch up.

The weather continued last week and this to be fabulous, sunny and warm and even my recce run last night was very warm, I should have taken a drink!!

Think I have caught up once again !
